Outdoor play offers added space that encourages children to be more active and work on a larger scale across all areas of learning and supports collaborative learning. We see the special nature of the outdoors as a bigger picture – to provide children with the positive experiences necessary to enable them to become lifelong learners and happy well-adjusted adults. We believe outdoor play should not consist of batting about on bikes but it being a planned part of children’s experiences
Trinity day Nursery offers huge potential and scope for many learning experiences. Staff, parents and children have shared ideas of what sort of spaces they would like outdoors:

  • Water play on a large scale with guttering, large water containers, tubes and pipes
  • Construction on a large scale using crates(also sparks imagination role play), real wood, real tools, critical thinking and problem solving opportunities
  • Den making materials
  • Places to communicate and ‘just be’ together
  • Places for digging and places for growing, Grandad’s potting shed, consolidating learning about where our food comes from
  • Creativity on a large scale using natural materials that you would find outdoors, twigs, pebbles, shells
  • Themed areas like a beach hut
  • Lighting as children love to go outside in the dark
  • Places to climb and hide
  • Develop weather boxes and themed boxes following children’s interests

We have a ‘wild’ garden of awe and wonder and children have discovered all sorts of wild life and bugs, as well as hiding amongst the blue bells. We have a separate baby garden as well as raised beds. This is still an on-going project. Ask a member of staff if you would like to be involved in our outdoor project.
